Berkeley native’s first symphony gets its premiere

- — Joshua Kosman

One of the most inventive and exciting initiatives undertaken by the Santa Rosa Symphony under Music Director Francesco Lecce-Chong is its First Symphony Project, a fouryear commissioning undertaking that gives young composers the support they need to tackle this demanding genre.

For the project’s second year, the orchestra will give the world premiere of a new work by Gabriella Smith, the Berkeley native whose music is full of ingenuity and beauty. Also on the program are Wagner’s “Lohengrin” Prelude and Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto featuring piano soloist Olga Kern.
