Rare textiles give rich insight into Southeast Asia
The new textile exhibition at the Asian Art Museum brings together garments and fabrics from countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia to showcase the rich weaving traditions of Southeast Asia.
“Weaving Stories” explores how both everyday and sacred fabrics have gone on to become cultural icons that not only communicate narratives about different regions and peoples, but also have inspired fashion globally.
The exhibition features many 19th and 20th century textiles that have never been exhibited before, paired with archival photographs showing the fabrics in their original contexts as well as the techniques for creating the pieces.
