L. Dennis Sheridan

-

Dennis Sheridan of San Francisco passed away on Sunday, December 5th. He was a remarkable person: very smart, funny—a master of dark humor—and a great storyteller, whose dour demeanor hid a tender heart. His passions were deep and wide, especially for his rescue dog Doc, books, blues, folk and Irish music, dance videos, his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers football team, and wild places. He challenged himself and fearlessly (stubbornly) followed wherever his interests led him—often down winding, rutted roads or barelythere trails with unknown destinations (once through a bog--no trail there at all). To the end, he did things on his own terms. He could find humor and adventure in everything and shared it equally with everyone. Honest, straightforward, and always curious, he was deeply loved by those who knew him.

Born Leo Dennis Sheridan in Philadelphia on April 23, 1944, he joined the Navy at 17, travelled the Caribbean and Mediterranean on the USS Nantahala as a radarman, and went on to become a self-taught woodworker and restorer of antiques and New Guinea art (in Canada, where he lived for several years, and back in the U.S.) He felt honored to be invited to assist at the Philadelphia Museum of Art with a Federalist furniture exhibition. His interest in computers led him to take a job as an online editor at PC World in San Francisco, eventually becoming Director of Online Services. He went on to manage IT for the San Francisco Bay Chapter of the Sierra Club. After retiring, he worked a number of seasons as Camp Host at several Northern California campsites, and later turned his typical enthusiasm towards cooking, baking, and creating dog treats. His corned beef was fantastic, according to his mostly vegetarian daughter.

He is survived by Lana, his wife of 51 years, beloved daughter Simone and son Teague, his devoted Doc, and 5 brothers and sisters. He will be so missed. “Ride wanted, off planet. Will share driving/expenses”

We’ll see you there.
