Utah beats Dallas with Doncic out

Donovan Mitchell scored 30 of his 32 points after halftime, Bojan Bogdanovic finished with 26 and the Utah Jazz opened the playoffs in Dallas with a 99-93 victory over the Mavericks, who were without injured AllStar guard Luka Doncic.

Doncic strained his left calf six days earlier in the regularsea­son finale.

Bogdanovic had Utah’s only two 3-pointers before halftime, in a 13-2 run over the final 31⁄2 minutes that put the Jazz ahead to stay.

Baseball: Sergio Alcantara snapped a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, Ketel Marte added an RBI double and the Arizona Diamondbac­ks beat the New York Mets 3-2, ending an 11game skid at Citi Field . ... Jose Abreu homered for the first time this season, closer Liam Hendriks left the bases loaded in the ninth inning and the host Chicago White Sox beat Tampa Bay 3-2.

Tennis: Defending champion Stefanos Tsitispas breezed into the Monte Carlo Masters final in Monaco after dispatchin­g second-seeded Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-2. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina reached his first ATP final by beating Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3. New No. 1 Iga Swiatek powered Poland into the Billie Jean King Cup Finals for the first time and they were joined by other newcomers Italy and Kazakhstan. Other winners in London included old hands the Czech Republic — six-time winners since 2011 — and Spain. The finals are in November at a venue yet to be decided.

NHL: Jeremy Swayman rebounded from a rough stretch with 23 saves and the host Boston Bruins clinched a playoff spot by holding off the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 to halt a three-game skid . ... Mikael Granlund had a goal and an assist to lead Nashville to a 4-3 home victory over Chicago . ... Alexis Lafreniere scored twice and the Rangers beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-0 in New York.

College baseball: Cole Elvis had two hits and drove in three runs as Cal (18-17, 9-9 Pac-12) overcame a 4-1, seventh-inning deficit to prevail 7-4 at Washington State (13-21, 5-13).
