Rose Minda Dacanay

-

Rosie Minda Dacanay, age 78, was surrounded by many loving family members when she went home to God on April 25, 2022. She was wife to Henry Dacanay Sr., devoted mother to Trisha, decd. Henry Jr., Larina, and Jonathan; loving mother-in-law to Rosie, Aaron, and Claude; caring sister to decd Alice, Galvin, decd. Bartolome Jr., decd. Abraham, Rogelio, and decd. Phillip; proud, loving grandmother to decd. Nathan, Kayla, Kiana, Jayden, Joshua, Dominic, Noelia, and Kylie; generous, considerate aunt to numerous nieces and nephews; and loving and caring sister-inlaw to many.

Rosie was born on March 23, 1944, in Mabini, Pangasinan, Philippines. She was 5th in line out of 7 children and very caring and devoted to helping her parents, Bartolome and Damiana Dela Rosa. In 1958, she arrived in San Francisco at the age of 14. As a young adult she enjoyed driving around in her IMPALA, having fun with friends, eating in Chinatown, shopping, and buying gifts for her best friends. She also had a thing for fast cars and secretly dreamed of driving the Autobahn one day. After graduating from Mission High School in 1962 she worked at Continental Insurance Company for a few years before starting her career at Southern

Pacific in SF. Her love for numbers flourished in the Payroll Accounting department as she excelled her way through various roles to Manager. She retired in 1996 around the time she was ready to become a fulltime grandparent. She had a great love for sports, never missed a 49ers or Warriors games on TV, and was often the person in the room who knew the most about each player. She loved spending time with her family and was known for her generosity, consideration, thoughtfulness, and caring heart. She will be remembered as the aunt that enjoyed taking her nieces and nephews on family vacations, and the aunt that nieces and nephews loved bringing their boyfriends and girlfriends to meet. She loved to joke around, in her funny and sarcastic way, with anyone who was open for a laugh. She especially loved being around her grandchildren, enjoying a meal, listening to them read, playing Sudoku with them, and taking them shopping for gifts. Rosie is immeasurably loved and will be missed by many.

Janet Marie (Sollie) Dunn of San Rafael passed peacefully from this world after several health issues. In true Jan fashion, she battled those challenges gracefully and without complaint, relying as always on her inner strength and indomitable spirit. “It could be worse,” she often said, quoting her Grandma Fuss.

Family meant everything to Jan. She leaves behind her beloved husband and friend of over 59 years, Dave. Jan was born to be a mother, always giving everything she had to Dan (Karen), Susan, Diane and David (Kara) in her unassuming, comforting way.

She was also a wonderful, loving Grandma and Janney to John, Abigail, Hannah, Emmy, Logan, Cade, Kellen and Maisy. Jan adored her grandchildren. They lit up her life. She was happiest whenever the gang was together (and even happier when that was in Maui). She always supported all of her kids’ and grandkids’ endeavors unconditionally, and maintained a sense of humor in her approach to life.

Jan was born in Winona, Minnesota, and raised in Austin, Minnesota. She graduated from Austin High School and attended Iowa State University before becoming a flight attendant for World Airways and Capitol Airlines. She and Dave met in the San Francisco office of Mutual of New York in 1961. After the “nice young chap” offered her a lift home, they embarked on an almost 60-year partnership of shared values: family, faith, love and laughter. Jan and Dave traveled the world together. Maui, Switzerland, London and Calistoga were among her favorite destinations. She was a magnificent quilter and enjoyed the companionship of that hobby with family and friends and on sewing getaways.

Jan maintained relationships throughout her life, including with her childhood friends from Austin. She also enjoyed cooking endless healthy and delicious meals, gardening, her spiritual studies, reading, meditating and clipping articles she thought others would enjoy.

Jan also leaves behind her big brother and sister-in-law Norm and Carol Sollie of Seattle, WA. Norm and his “Little Tyke” were two years apart, always very close, and even closer as the years passed. She is also survived by Judy and Paul Scannell of Millbrae, CA; Mary and Chris Hogan of Austin, MN; and Tina Sollie of Austin, MN. Jan was predeceased by her parents, Norman and Thelma Sollie; brothers Paul and Tom; and sister Judy. She was also predeceased by Joanne and Don Labbe.

The family expresses its sincere gratitude and appreciation to Joana, Marlene and Houria, Jan’s dedicated caregivers during her last months. Their kindness, tenderness and support of Jan will never be forgotten.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on Friday, May 13, with an 11 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Isabella’s Catholic Church (1 Trinity Way, San Rafael) and reception to follow.

Jan’s loving presence made the world a kinder, gentler place. Her goodness and light will live on forever in our hearts and memories.
