Murray advances to Stuttgart final

Andy Murray will play his first grass-court singles final since winning Wimbledon in 2016 after beating Nick Kyrgios 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the Stuttgart (Germany) Open semifinals. Murray’s opponent in Sunday’s final will be second-seeded Matteo Berrettini, who prevailed 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) over Oscar Otte. American Alison Riske beat Viktorija Golubic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 and will face Beatriz Haddad Maia for the Nottingham Open title in England. Haddad Maia advanced when Tereza Martincova was forced to retire in their semifinal.

In the men’s event, top-seeded Dan Evans of Britain beat Jack Sock of the United States 7-5, 6-3 to advance to a final against Jordan Thompson, who won an all-Australian semifinal match 6-4, 6-2 against Alexei Popyrin.

Soccer: Ben Bender scored on a deflected strike in stoppage time in the first half, Derrick Jones added a goal in the 91st minute and host Charlotte (6-8-1) won 2-0 over the New York Red Bulls (6-4-5) in MLS play.

Motor sports: Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc won the pole for the fourth consecutiv­e Formula One race with a lap of 1 minute, 41.359 seconds around the Baku street circuit in Azerbaijan to beat Sergio Perez of Red Bull by 0.282 of a second. Championsh­ip leader Max Verstappen qualified third in the other Red Bull, 0.347 off Leclerc’s pace.

College baseball: Peyton Stoval sparked a three-run fifth inning with a leadoff home run, Connor Noland threw 62⁄3 shutout innings and Arkansas beat No. 10 overall seed North Carolina 4-1 in the first game of the best-of-three super regional series in Chapel Hill, N.C . ... Nick Biddison hit two of No. 4 overall seed Virginia Tech’s five home runs and the Hokies evened the Blacksburg, Va., super regional with a 14-8 victory over Oklahoma . ... Dylan Campbell drove in the winning run with a two-out bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning and No. 9 overall seed Texas overcame a five-run deficit to beat No. 8 seed East Carolina 9-8 to level the Greenville, N.C., super regional.
