‘Iolanthe’ takes a turn through wartime London

- — Joshua Kosman

Like all of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas, “Iolanthe” offers a trenchant critique of Victorian society. But the satire is always universal enough that the piece can be fruitfully transported to just about any historical period or location.

In a new production for Lamplighters Music Theatre, director Nicolas Aliaga Garcia (pictured) situates the action in a mythical woodland setting alongside London during the Second World War. Conductor David Drummond leads a cast that features soprano Monica Rose Slater in the title role, with tenor Liam Daley as her beloved Strephon and Cary Ann Rosko as the imperious Queen of the Fairies.
