Chiefs’ QB Mahomes solid against Chicago

Patrick Mahomes threw for 60 yards and a touchdown on Kansas City's first possession, then watched as the Chiefs lost to the Chicago Bears 19-14 in the preseason opener Saturday in Chicago.

Chiefs safety Justin Reid showed he could be an emergency kicker, nailing an extra point after Justin Watson caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Shane Buechele in the closing seconds of the first half. Reid, who made a 65-yard field goal in a training camp practice, sent the kick down the middle to make it 14-0.

Mahomes was 6-for-7 passing on a 72-yard drive after Chicago went three-and-out on the game's first possession. The four-time Pro Bowler dumped the ball off to Blake Bell for a 5-yard TD, capping an 11-play possession — then called it a day. Sam Darnold threw a touchdown pass and Baker Mayfield was solid aside from a fumbled snap in the latest stage of the Carolina Panthers quarterbac­k competitio­n, a 23-21 preseasono­pening victory against the host Washington Commanders. QB Zach Wilson of the New York Jets is expected to miss two to four weeks with a bone bruise and meniscus tear in his right knee . ... Cleveland Browns starting center Nick Harris will likely need seasonendi­ng surgery on his right knee that was injured against Jacksonvil­le on Friday night. Sharks defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov will miss the first few months of the season with a torn right Achilles tendon. Knyzhov had surgery Wednesday, and the Sharks estimate it'll take about six months to recover. The 24-year-old Knyzhov missed all of last season with a groin injury.

Baseball: Former Giant Chadwick Tromp doubled twice, singled and drove in three runs in his first major-league action of the season, leading the Atlanta Braves over the Miami Marlins 5-2 in the opening game of a doublehead­er.

Soccer: Manchester United plumbed new depths with a 4-0 loss at Brentford to send Erik ten Hag's team into meltdown after just two games of the Premier League season.

Mistakes by goalkeeper David De Gea gifted the first two goals to Josh Dasilva and Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee nodded in the third on a corner and Bryan Mbeumo hit a slick fourth on the counteratt­ack against the visitors. Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden were Manchester City's scorers along with an own-goal in its 4-0 thrashing of Bournemout­h. ... Gabriel Jesus scored twice before halftime and assisted second-half strikes by Granit Xhaka and Gabriel Martinelli in Arsenal's 4-2 win over Leicester . ... Aston Villa beat Everton 2-1 for its first win of the season. Danny Ings and Emi Buendia scored for Villa before an 87th-minute owngoal by Lucas Digne gave Everton hope . ... Wolverhamp­ton keeper Jose Sa saved a late penalty kick from Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic to preserve a 0-0 draw . ... Brighton and Newcastle toiled to a 0-0 stalemate . ... Golf: Ewen Ferguson of Scotland extended his lead to three strokes by shooting 2-underpar 68 in the third round of the Handa World Invitation­al in Northern Ireland.

In the women's event, American Amanda Doherty led for the third straight day and was still one shot ahead, at 12-under 206 for the tournament, in her bid for a first LPGA Tour title.

Swimming: Romania's David Popovici, 17, became the youngest swimmer to break the world record in the men's 100meter freestyle, beating the mark set more than 13 years ago in the same pool in Rome. Popovici touched in 46.86 seconds at the European championsh­ips to top the time of 46.91 set by Brazil's Cesar Cielo at the 2009 world championsh­ips.
