Tony-winning revival makes tour stop in S.F.

- — Lily Janiak

There’s the lilting, gently aching melody of “People Will Say We’re in Love.” There’s “Pore Jud Is Daid,” in which a young lover brutally makes a fool of his hapless rival. Then there’s life’s eternal dilemma, posed by Ado Annie in “I Cain’t Say No”: She’s heard tell of how badly men treat women, “but when I’m with a feller, I fergit!”

These are just some of the delights of “Oklahoma!” — the 1943 Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II musical that helped codify musical theater from a loosely strung succession of numbers into a unified art form, in which every component furthers storytelling.

Now the director Daniel Fish reveals just how much “Oklahoma!” still has to show us about musical theater, with a Tony-winning revival now touring to BroadwaySF’s Golden Gate Theatre. “Oklahoma!”: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16; 1 and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17; 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Friday, Aug. 18-19; 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20; 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21. Through Sept. 11. $56-$256. Golden Gate Theatre, 1 Taylor St., S.F. 888746-1799. www.broadwaysf.com
