Math and reading proficiency

The new school board has said it wants to stay laser-focused on student achievement and to kick off that process, district staff analyzed student performance data in reading and math, noting disappointing results and a wide achievement gap. Board President Jenny Lam has vowed the topic will be a primary focus for the district, with at least half of the time in public meetings devoted to the topic in the coming year.

Teachers say they’ve been stressed out and distracted from their primary goal of educating students due to a payroll fiasco that’s been ongoing since January. The district’s new payroll system has resulted in thousands of software and user errors and issues in paychecks, including many staff members missing partial or full monthly pay.

The district has already hired three people to handle the problem, but needs more.
