The best from Beane’s ‘Moneyball’ seasons

Starting pitcher: Bartolo Colon

When Oakland signed Colon to a one-year, $2 million deal in 2012, the 39-year-old hadn’t won 10 games since his

Cy Young campaign of 2005. In those seven years, the Dominican right-hander bounced between four teams, missed a season to injuries (2010), and had a controversial stem cell procedure before his 2011 comeback with the Yankees. Colon became a fan favorite at

the Coliseum, using his portly frame and carefree approach to compile a 28-15 record and 2.99 ERA over two seasons. Colon put Oakland in position for its first postseason berth since 2006 before a failed PED test ended his 2012 season in August. He returned in 2013 to finish sixth in Cy Young voting at age 40. Colon’s command of his moving fastball — he threw an MLB-record 38 consecutive strikes in a 2012 game — made up for a lack of velocity.
