Margaret “Peg” Carroll

-

Margaret Mary “Peg” Carroll, 92, a San Francisco native, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on August 18, 2022, at the Villa Siena Retirement Community in Mountain View, where she lived for the past ten years.

Peg was born on September 15, 1929, to Michael and Catherine (Healy) McAuliffe. She had two younger siblings, Kathleen and Mike. Peg graduated from Presentation High School in 1947 and married Thomas Carroll in May 1949. Tom and Peg lived in the Sunset District most of their lives, where they raised their four children.

Peg is survived by her sister, Kathleen Kelly; by her four children, Fr. Tom Carroll, S.J., Cathy Carroll, Kevin Carroll (Kathy), and Peggy O’Donnell (Jim); by six grandsons, Tom Carroll (Hillaray), Pat O’Donnell (Ceri Garfield), Danny O’Donnell (Jenny), Steve Carroll (Morgan), Brendan Carroll, and Séan O’Donnell (Kerry); by six greatgrandchildren, Liam Carroll, Emily Carroll, Penny Carroll, Fáinse O’Donnell, Scarlett Carroll, and Lily O’Donnell, and by her well-loved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

After the death of her husband Tom in 2008, Peg decided to move from the family home on 38th Avenue in San Francisco to the Villa Siena Retirement Community in August 2012. The move afforded her excellent care, a warmly welcoming, active, and faith-filled community, and an escape from the ever-present Sunset District fog. Peg loved the South Bay sunshine, and she shared her positivity, kindness, and memorable smile with the residents and staff at Villa Siena.

A celebration of Peg’s life will be held at Saint Gabriel Church in San Francisco in November. The burial will then take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma. Donations may be made in Peg’s memory to the Thomas J. Carroll (‘43) Alumni Scholarship at Saint Ignatius College Preparatory (2001 - 37th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94116 or siprep.org/donate) or to the Villa Siena Retirement Community (1855 Miramonte Avenue, Mountain View, CA 94040 or villa-siena.org/ donate).
