John D. Moore III

-

After a lifetime spent making the world a better place in his own unique way, John Douglass Moore III died peacefully at MillsPeninsula Medical Center on August 15, 2022, at the age of 80. John was born at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C. on July 24, 1942, to John Douglass Moore Jr. and Ella Frances Orr Moore. A 1964 graduate of Penn State University, he served for three years as a Captain in the US Army stationed in Frankfurt, Germany during the Vietnam War. John met his soulmate at Penn State in 1963 and couldn’t bare the distance between his hometown of Erie, Pennsylvania and Germany. He married Beverley Ferrier Moore on July 24, 1965 and whisked her back to Germany for what ended up being a twoyear European honeymoon on a 0-3 Pay Grade. After he completed his military service, they moved first to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1967 for a short stint in the insurance industry, then to Nashua, New Hampshire where they began a life in the commercial construction industry, followed by Camillus, New York. In 1974, he was promoted by Burlington Industries and moved west to Burlingame, California. There, John dedicated his life to his family and their variety of endeavors, his business dealings, and strengthening bonds within his many circles of friends. He worked hard to provide for his family while also being involved in the Rotary Club of San Mateo, and also as a Penn State ambassador on the West Coast. He never missed a Penn State football game and could often be heard throughout the neighborhood on Saturdays during the season cheering on his favorite team. When John’s son and daughter played sports throughout their youth, it only amplified his spirit.

Upon John’s early retirement at the end of 2000, he took up the game of golf and the hobby of private investing. He had always loved the sport of golf but felt it took up too much time from a day to build his business. Beverley was an advocate of John being on the course at least three times a week. He dedicated himself to the sport, and more so to the people he bonded with at The Peninsula Golf and Country Club and in Peninsula Investors LLC, where he served as Vice Chairman, Treasurer, and a member of the Investment Committee. A cause near and dear to his heart was his membership in the Hoover Institution. With the stock market opening early in the morning, he was able to “work” at home with Beverley in the morning and play golf after the market simmered down. He was incredibly proud of his first hole-in-one at his home club of PGCC on October 27, 2006, on the 142 yards, Par 3 15th Hole. He had another hole-in-one at the Los Altos Country Club in 2012, while in the presence of his longtime friends Bob Glockner and John Freitas.

John loved a good story. He loved to laugh. He loved people and rarely missed a party. He was always impeccably groomed and dressed.

His wife, Beverley, mother Ella Frances, and father John Douglass Jr. preceded John in death. He is survived by his son, John Douglass Moore IV of Lake Oswego, Oregon, daughter Susan Stafford Moore of New York, New York, and granddaughter Shelby Anne Moore of Lake Oswego, Oregon; siblings Pamela Moore Conley of Berkeley Lake, Georgia, and Page Moore Ochs (George) of Anchorage, Kentucky. John was also the beloved and highly respected uncle of ten nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mills-Peninsula Hospital Foundation. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 pm on Thursday, September 1, 2022, at The Episcopal Church of Saint Matthew in San Mateo, California.
