Daniel David Heagerty
Daniel David Heagerty, environmental activist and community leader, passed away Sunday, July 17th, 2022, in the company of family, at his home in Mill Valley, California. He was 72. Daniel was born on April 22, 1950, in San Mateo, California, to Mary Elise Barrett Heagerty and Leo Edward Heagerty. He is survived by his children, Casey and Lauren, his granddaughter Margot, and his siblings Elise, Moreen, Leo Jr., Patrick, and Ann.
Daniel was a passionate advocate for environmental causes throughout his life. He dedicated his professional career in Portland to natural resources management and environmental policy, and served on and chaired a number of boards, including the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, the Nature Conservancy of Oregon, Caldera Arts, and the Oregon Zoo.
Upon retirement, Daniel moved back to the Bay Area and continued to devote himself to environmental service, focussing principally on the protection of natural areas in the Tahoe region and West Marin. He also mentored and organized climate activism efforts for local high school students, and dedicated many volunteer hours to trail maintenance on Mount Tamalpais and at Spirit Rock Meditation Center.
Guided by the principle of the Public Trust Doctrine, Daniel deeply believed that the natural environment is a public responsibility that must be stewarded by each generation to ensure its health for the next, and inspired countless others to think similarly. He will also be remembered for his infectious laugh, his artful storytelling, and his love of birds, painting and poetry. For remembrance kindly donate to the Resource Renewal Institute, 8 Bolinas Rd Suite 3A, Fairfax, CA.
