Adelaide Cassity McManus, 77, passed away on September 5, 2022, in Oakland, California. Addie was born to Dr. Grace Altenau and Dr. John H. Cassity in Brooklyn, NY, on December 26, 1944. She grew up in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood, went to Fort Hamilton High School, and attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. She graduated from Brooklyn College in New York. She made many friends in her youth and college years who became lifelong friends.

She enjoyed travel and lived in Europe as a young woman, and also called both Greenwich Village and Manhattan home for some years. After moving to the West Coast in the 1980s, Adelaide was employed for many years at the University of California, Berkeley, as a purchasing agent in the Office of the President. She was married to Robert H. McManus, “Bob,” and enjoyed frequent travel and leisure with him. Bob died in 2007.

Addie was fabulous at crossword puzzles—she did the New York Times in ink— and enjoyed movies, art, music, reading, and her cat, Chansie. She was a member of the Elks Club in Alameda for many years. Her family and longtime friends will greatly miss Addie’s special sparkle and sense of fun. She liked a good party.

Addie is survived by her brother-in-law and sisters-inlaw, Tom and Mandy McManus and Carole McManus, many nieces and nephews, and her very dear friends.

A Celebration of Adelaide’s Life will be held on Saturday, October 1st, at 11am at The Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland.
