Chanticleer opens with show of versatility

- — Joshua Kosman

The singing of the men’s chorus Chanticleer is one of the Bay Area’s most reliable musical treasures.

The chorus is about to begin its 45th season with a series of concerts around the Bay Area highlighting the extent of what it can do. The program, titled “Labyrinths,” includes music by Josquin des Prez, representing the group’s original founding focus on the sacred music of the Renaissance.

The program also features an array of works by Black composers, including Trevor Weston, Tania León and George Walker. It features modern choral music by composer Steven Sametz, and if past history is anything to go by, there will probably be added selections from the popular songbook. Something for everyone, in short.
