‘Mean Girls’ stars went on to have nice careers

- — Mick LaSalle

“Mean Girls,” like “Groundhog Day,” is one of those rare films to have introduced a new phrase into the lexicon. The film, about the politics of popularity in high school, featured Lindsay Lohan in her best role and also showcased a number of young actresses who’d go on to great careers — Lizzy Caplan, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried and, best of all, Rachel McAdams, who plays the meanest of the mean girls here.

This 2004 film, directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey, took the high school comedy form and used it to make some shrewd observations about the power dynamics of high school and social life in general.

The Alamo Drafthouse is celebrating the film with a movie party. Go if you’re a fan. Consider going if you haven’t seen it. It’s a lot more subtle and sophisticated than you might expect.

“Mean Girls” Movie Party: 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3. $22. Alamo Drafthouse, 2550 Mission St, S.F. www.drafthouse.com/sf
