Annemarie Hellmann, age 84, died peacefully at her home in San Anselmo, surrounded by family, on November 6. Originally from Northern Germany, Annemarie lived in San Anselmo for 62 years. She immigrated to San Francisco with her cousin Horst Ratjen in November 1956, sponsored by their aunt AnneMarie Schulz. She worked as the nanny for Roselyne and Richard Swig in San Francisco until she was able to enroll in beauty school. While Annemarie had been a practicing hairdresser in Germany, California required that she attend a local school and get licensed in her adopted state.

Her own hair was always fashionable and elegantly styled. Annemarie met her future husband, Rolf, at the German American Club in San Francisco. Once married, they moved to San Anselmo and were married for 53 years until his death in 2012. Annemarie loved music, dancing, socializing, entertaining, food, sweets and a great party! She was a loving and caring person who made friends easily and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with family and friends - both old and new. She could talk to anyone and make them feel special. “If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever!” She is survived by her daughter Doris (Kevin) of Pasadena, her son Eric (Val) of Boise, ID, her grandson Trent (Andrea) of San Diego, her granddaughter Carlie (Tyler) of Boise, ID, her sister Antje of San Mateo, CA, her brother-in-law Sieg of San Anselmo and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and cousins in the United States and Germany. Annemarie will be dearly missed and fondly remembered for celebrating every birthday with a green Swedish Princess Cake! A celebration of her life will be held on November 5th, 2pm at The Spinnaker Restaurant in Sausalito. Please RSVP to (310) 989-8314 or Lightgirl1@gmail.com. Annemarie requested donations to be made to: The German Ladies’ General Benevolent Society, P.O. Box 27101 San Francisco, CA 94127.
