A promising piano concerto to premiere in S.F.

- — Joshua Kosman

When Esa-Pekka Salonen was hired as music director of the San Francisco Symphony, one of the things that meant for local audiences was a greater presence for his fellow Finnish composers — in particular his longtime cronies Magnus Lindberg and Kaija Saariaho. Now that promise is being carried out.

Lindberg (pictured), a composer of vivid imagination and technical prowess, is about to unveil his new, still untitled piano concerto. It’s written for pianist Yuja Wang — also an artist of vivid imagination and technical prowess — with Salonen conducting the Symphony.

Alongside it comes Carl Nielsen’s “Helios” Overture and the ever-remarkable Concerto for Orchestra of Béla Bartók.

San Francisco Symphony: 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 13-15. $40-$209. Davies Symphony Hall, 401 Van Ness Ave., S.F. 415-864-6000. www.sfsymphony.org
