Eugenia Collins Murphy July 13, 1934 – September 28, 2022

Jean Murphy, a proud San Franciscan for over eight decades, passed away in her beloved city surrounded by her loving family. Her big heart and wicked sense of humor were on display even at the end as we shared both laughs and tears. During her long and full life, music, reading, good food & wine, a great cup of coffee, and the finer things life had to offer. But most importantly, she loved her roles as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all.

Jean was born to Eugenia Winifred and John Michael Collins in 1934 Sadly, her mother passed away shortly after her birth and her father was ill during her childhood and could not care for her.

Jean was raised by her aunt Carmelita Lane, an extraordinary person who raised Jean like her own in a loving and supportive environment, including ensuring Jean attended Saint Annes Grammar School and Presentation High School.

In 1954, Jean married Eugene Murphy, a 30-year

San Francisco Police Officer, and raised a family in the heart of the city. They raised their three children and joined the school community at Ecole Notre Dame des Victoires. As she told her children: “it was the people that you met there, that shaped the way that you kids grew up and it was beautiful”. Ironically, Jean chose NDV because as a young woman she rode the streetcar and fell in love watching a man taking his children to school in their sailor suit uniforms. Jean was at her best at NDV — involved in everything from field trips to CYO athletics, and the Ball de Paris. Later in life, Jean channeled her energy by re-entering the works force at the University of San Francisco as an administrative assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for over 12 years.

Jean is preceded in death by her parents and sister, her husband Eugene, and daughter Eileen. She is survived by son Michael (Elaine), daughter Sheila Murphy Betta (Roger), and son Matthew (Kathleen), and grandchildren Shannon, Jojo, Michaela, Madeline, Erin, and Jack.

Throughout her life, Jean relished the time spent with her close friends many of which passed before her. She was fun-loving, a great storyteller, and never one to be shy to express her opinion about life, especially when it came to San

Francisco politics.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 1st at 1:00PM, at Notre Dame des Victoires Church, 566 Bush Street, San

Francisco, 94108.

Memorial donations can be made in Jean’s name to Ecole Notre Dame des Victoire, 659 Pine Street, San Francisco, 94108.
