Egarr revisits a transfixing Handel oratorio

-

Handel’s late oratorio, “Theodora,” is one of his most alluring and dramatically potent creations. This tale of early Christian martyrdom is alternately violent and serene in its portrayal of religious faith and its travails, and it features some of the composer’s most transfixing vocal writing.

Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale made an unforgettable recording of the piece 30 years ago under former music director Nicholas McGegan, and now it’s time for his successor, Richard Egarr, to tackle the piece on his own terms. The cast is led by soprano Julie Roset (pictured) in the title role alongside mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston, countertenor Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, tenor Thomas Cooley and bass-baritone Dashon Burton.
