Livio Leo Socal

July 26, 1932 - October 9, 2022

Best known to everyone as Leo Socal. Leo passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 9 in the late morning. For just over a year he’s had health problems. He overcame a lot, but succumbed to his illnesses. He is now reunited with his wife Maureen who he has missed so much for the past five years

He is survived by his daughters Kathy Socal and Debi Socal and son John Socal. Also by his two granddaughters Samantha Socal and Amanda Socal Meier, her husband Jack and their baby Derek. Leo was always so happy when his great grandchild visited.

He was a devoted husband and father. A self-made man who always supported all his family. He worked hard all his life.

Leo was a US Army veteran, member of the Carpenters Union Local 22 for 68 years, a member of the Masons, and the Scottish Rite Masons.

He traveled the world with his family. He enjoyed hobbies including collecting. He organized and displayed his and his wife’s collections throughout their home.

A native son of San Francisco he was born at Saint Francis Hospital on July 26, 1932. He grew up speaking only Italian at home. He learned English when he started school at Spring Valley Elementary School. He attended Marina Junior High School and then graduated from Galileo High School. He received an AA from Skyline College in 1969, where he went to night school while working. He always worked. And on weekends he would build cabinets in his workshop in the garage.

As most people who knew him, he had a wry sense of humor.

The family thanks everyone who has helped so much in the past year and a half: San Francisco Fire Department, various ambulance company personnel, Health Flex personnel, and By The Bay Hospice personnel and services. All these folks made life a little easier for him and his devoted caregiver and daughter Kathy. When emergencies arose, their kindness and professional work was appreciated more than we can say

Services begin with a rosary at Duggan’s on Wednesday October 19, from 4-6pm.

Then Thursday October 20, mass will be held at 11am at St Philips Church in Noe Valley, followed by a procession to the Italian Cemetery in Colma where he will be joining his late wife.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to Hospice By The Bay or any animal rescue group that you prefer.
