Eddie passed away peacefully at home on October 24th after a courageous battle with cancer.

Edward Larry Gutierrez was born to Hilario and Elvira Gutierrez on August 13, 1942. He was a 2nd generation native and grew up in Noe Valley, the 4th of 8 children: Robert, John, Irene, Larry, Rose, Richard and Julie. He is survived by his wife Debbie, his children Anthony and Victoria and his grandchildren Anthony, Sophia and Mia and many other loving family members and friends.

After graduating from Mission High School in 1960, he became a longshoreman, a career lasting over 50 years with Locals 10 and 34. He remained an active member of the union holding elected office, serving as Business Agent and on the Board of Directors.

The ultimate “Native Son” Eddie participated in all that was San Francisco, including gatherings with his childhood friends from Day Street Park, his longshoreman brothers, friends in North Beach and his Monday night dinners at Westlake Joe’s. He was a proud season ticket holder for both the SF Giants and SF 49ers. He was featured in Herb Caen’s column on his birthday, 8/13/1991, which described the banter between Eddie and Tommy Lasorda (the Dodgers

Manager) over the rivalry between the two teams. Eddie’s favorite past time was spent on the beach at Russian River with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Eddie recently eulogized a departed friend saying “it was an honor to have him as a friend and I miss him”. Many have shared their memories and Eddie’s own words will be used to describe how much he will be missed. Eddie, it was an honor to have you as our family and our friend. We will miss you dearly.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Church, 221 Valley St., San Francisco on Thursday, November 3rd at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, consider a donation in Eddie’s memory to the Salesian Boys and Girls Club or any organization that you prefer.
