Steven B. Stein –Feb.13, 1943 – July 22, 2022

Son of Ruth and Alex Stein, Steve was raised in the Bronx and Queens, NYC. and educated at “Music and Art” school of performing arts, Queens College, and St. John’s Law School.

Steve enjoyed practicing law for 52 years starting in New York City and for the last 44 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. He formed treasured professional and personal friendships with each of the firms he affiliated with over those years. The last being the Brady Law Firm in San Rafael.

A longtime member of San Francisco Trial Lawyers, Steve received their Distinguished Mediator Award in 2002 He also was awarded Mediator of the Year by the American Arbitration Association.

He had an amazing talent and tenacity for resolving disputes.

Steve was honored to serve as judge prop-tem in San Francisco Superior Court and gave generously of his time in that role.

Guided by his street smarts, heart, and intellect, in every corner of his life Steve served humbly with creative problem-solving abilities whether as litigator, mediator, or judge pro tem.

Above all Steve treasured his extensive family, from his wife Gaby, his son Seth, daughter-in-law Suzanne, 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, sister, Andrea and his Woodlon family, sister Kim, his sister and brothers in law, and many nieces, nephews. They each filled his life with love and joy, from seeing their first steps, to graduations, careers, and families of their own.

Before beginning his law career, Steve was a dedicated teacher in New York’s lower east side, earnestly working with students and involved in the teachers’ movement of the time. He then moved to Los Angeles where he worked for the national PBS show “The Advocates” as an associate producer under the mentorship of Harvard professor, Roger Fisher (author of “Getting to Yes”); thus sowing the seeds for his years as a mediator.

Steve loved living with redwood trees on the “green belt” behind his home and during his forty years in Corte Madera he served on various committees.

He was an extraordinary man, thoughtful, kind, gentle; a man who went out of his way to help others. While he will be sorely missed, his legacy and giving nature will live on in the hearts of his family and the many whose lives he touched

Forever expressing his gratitude in life, in his last days Steve shared these parting feelings: “I am so glad I have a wonderful son and family; I think I have done some good in this world. I am going to miss the action and miss knowing how things turn out, but I am not afraid to die, and

I am ready for the next adventure!”

Steve died of a rare leukemia and passed peacefully in the comfort of his home. He fought passionately for his clients, friends, and family until the very end.
