Exit Theatre takes final bow in threes

Best bets from Datebook’s arts and entertainment critics and contributors

- — Lily Janiak

If we lament that Exit Theatre is mounting the last full production at its Eddy Street location, we can at least take solace in the fact that Stuart Bousel is leading it.

The San Francisco playwright, director and producer is an idea volcano, always coming up with new festivals and championing fresh voices, all with a DIY moxie that makes your own pipe dreams seem more practicable. Now, his “Adventures in Place: A Post, a Poem, a Prayer” bids farewell to the staunch Tenderloin District venue with a reading series of pandemic-related writing. Subject matter includes a food bank line, a couple’s last morning together, “I Got Vaccinated” posts, Stephen Sondheim and more.

Each night, Bousel is joined by two other artists, including indie theater stalwarts Rob Ready, Jerome Joseph Gentes, Nicole Odell, Benjamin Wachs and Exit Theatre Artistic Director Christina Augello, who contribute their own pandemic poems, songs and musings.
