Carey grabs vault gold medal at Worlds

American Jade Carey soared to victory in the women’s vault final on Saturday, giving her a second trip to the top of the podium at the World Championsh­ips in Liverpool, England, after helping the U.S. women capture the team gold earlier in the meet.

Carey’s average score of 14.516 for her two vaults was just enough to edge teammate Jordan Chiles. Chiles’ 14.350 average was good enough for silver, just ahead of Coline Devillard of France at 14.166.

Shilese Jones of the U.S. added a third medal at the world championsh­ips by earning a silver on uneven bars to go with the team gold and a silver in the all-around.

Baseball: Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel will miss the rest of the World Series after injuring his right knee in Game 5. Houston replaced him on its active roster Saturday with rookie catcher Korey Lee.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas for the eighth straight time, edging an entertaini­ng semifinal 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (4) to stay on track for a record-extending seventh Paris Masters title on Saturday.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion next faces unseeded Danish teenager Holger Rune, who has never been in a Masters final. Rune beat eighth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals

• Top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz will miss the rest of the season after sustaining an abdominal muscle tear while playing at the Paris Masters. The Spanish teenager pulled out during a second-set tiebreaker against Holger Rune in their quarterfin­al on Friday.

Soccer: Erling Haaland came off the bench to convert an injury-time penalty and send 10man Manchester City to the top of the English Premier League with a 2-1 win against visiting Fulham on Saturday . ... Crysencio Summervill­e scored another late goal to help Leeds complete a 4-3 comeback win over Bournemout­h in front of an Elland Road crowd that had booed the home team off the field at halftime . ... Pascal Gross’ late goal clinched Brighton’s 3-2 win over a Wolverhamp­ton team that tried to hang on for a draw after Nelson Semedo’s first-half red card . ... Goals from Youri Tielemans and Harvey Barnes secured a 2-0 victory for Leicester over Everton, its third win in four games . ... Mathias Jorgensen’s own goal in stoppage time saw Nottingham Forest draw 2-2 with Brentford.

Golf: Momoko Ueda of Japan shot a 4-under 68 on Saturday to take a one-stoke lead after three rounds of the LPGA Toto Classic in Shiga, Japan. Ueda also held a one-shot lead after the second round.

NHL: Ville Husso made 26 saves, and the Red Wings snapped the New York Islanders’ five-game win streak with a 3-0 victory in Detroit . ... Artturi Lehkonen scored in his home country, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-1 for a sweep of the NHL’s two-game series in Tampere, Finland.
