Cenaduria Elvira
Cenaduria Elvira, a home restaurant in East Oakland, is one of the most singular places in the Bay Area. The marquee dish is a long, bubbly tostada raspada ($13), but the low-key banger is the wonderfully crisp fried taco ($3). This Jalisciense dish typically accompanies a torta ahogada, but here these fried beauties are good enough on their own. For fillings, you can choose between potato, beans or picadillo, which, in this case, is a mix of shredded pork and ground beef. Though you can order them for takeout or delivery, they taste best right out of the fryer. The only thing missing is a few dabs of the extra-potent salsa made with chile Yahualica.
