Agnieszka Pilat turns robots into painters
For the past year, Agnieszka Pilat has been teaching the Boston Dynamics-created robots Digit and Spot how to paint. Now, Modernism hosts an exhibit of a dozen large scale abstract paintings resulting from this project. Pilat sees the robots as “apprentices,” rather than mechanical tools, and believes that through her programming, they have manifested their own unique artistic points of view.
The show is Pilat’s second with the gallery, following last year’s “Thinking Machines: Renaissance 2.0” at Modernism West. The mix of technology and fine art that has become Pilat’s signature continues to find new fans, especially among the Silicon Valley set. Who knows what she will program those robots to make next?
