Adler fellows step into S.F. Opera spotlight

- — Joshua Kosman

Among the most reliable highlights of the Bay Area’s operatic year is “The Future is Now,” the annual showcase event for the San Francisco Opera’s Adler fellows. These gifted young artists have all done their part for months during the company’s regular fall season, understudying and supporting the bigger names who have graced the stage of the War Memorial Opera House.

Now it’s their time for a turn in the spotlight. Under the leadership of Music Director Eun Sun Kim — as supportive a musical guide as anyone could ask for, the Adlers promise a robust sequence of operatic arias and ensembles that should provide an early glimpse of future stardom.

The program includes excerpts from operas by Handel, Britten, Menotti and more. “The Future is Now”: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2. $34-$69. Herbst Theatre, 401 Van Ness Ave., S.F. 415-864-3330. www.sfopera.com
