Griffen, Sears lift No. 3 Crimson Tide

Rylan Griffen scored 16 points, Mark Sears added 15 and No. 3 Alabama held off a big challenge from its in-state rival, beating host Auburn 77-69 on Saturday.

The Crimson Tide (22-3, 12-0 SEC) remained the only Power-5 team without a league loss. The Tigers (17-8, 7-5) missed nine consecutiv­e shots in the final minutes.

Alabama shot 59.2% (29-for-49) in the game but the nation’s top rebounding team was edged on the boards, 36-34.

Auburn led by eight points in the first half, shutting down the Tide’s two top scorers most of the way. Brandon Miller didn’t score for more than 11 minutes and Sears got his first points at the freethrow line with 4:26 left.

Sir’Jabri Rice scored 24 points in just 17 minutes and No. 5 Texas defeated visiting West Virginia 9460 . ... Jalen Wilson scored 18 points, and No. 9 Kansas rolled past host host Oklahoma 78-55 . ... Kam Jones, Oso Ighodaro and Tyler Kolek each scored 14 points to lead No. 10 Marquette to an 89-75 win over host Georgetown . ... David Jones scored 16 points and AJ Storr added 15 for host St. John’s, which beat No. 20 Providence 73-68.

In women’s play, Maddy Siegrist scored 50 points and No. 15 Villanova smashed visiting Seton Hall 99-65. With 1,550 points in Big East regularsea­son play, Siegrist surpassed former Boston College standout Sarah Behn (1,546) for the league record.

WNBA: The Chicago Sky acquired Marina Mabrey as part of a four-team deal with the New York Liberty,

Dallas Wings and Phoenix Mercury. The Sky also received the Mercury’s second-round draft pick next year.

The Wings, who gave up Mabrey, received Diamond DeShields from Phoenix as well as Chicago’s first-round draft picks the next two seasons. Dallas also has the rights to swap first-round picks with the Sky in 2025.

New York gave up 2021 WNBA Rookie of the Year Michaela Onyenwere to Phoenix and received the rights to Leonie Fiebich from Chicago as well the Sky’s second-round pick next year. The Liberty also have the chance to swap first-round picks with the Mercury in 2025.

Phoenix also received Chicago’s third-round pick next year as well as the Sky’s second-round pick in 2025.

NHL: Mike Matheson scored in overtime to lift host Montreal over the New York Islanders 4-3 . ... Anthony Cirelli scored two goals, including the winner with 43 seconds to play, as Tampa Bay beat host Dallas 3-1 . ... Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman had a goal and an assist each to lead Edmonton past host Ottawa 6-3. ... Matt Duchene scored 34 seconds into overtime and visiting Nashville defeated Philadelph­ia 2-1 . ... Calgary scored four times in just over five minutes to beat host Buffalo 7-2 . ... Dylan Larkin and Jonatan Berggren scored two goals apiece and host Detroit beat Vancouver 5-2.

Golf: Wang Jeung-hun and Alejandro del Rey both shot 6-under-par 66s to sit atop the leaderboar­d after three rounds of the European tour’s Singapore Classic.
