Larry Moroney
July 22, 1938 - March 9, 2023
Larry Moroney, age 84, died peacefully at home on March 9, 2023 with his beloved wife Margaret and daughter Linda by his side.
Larry was born on July 22, 1938 in Ireland and spent his youth swimming in the River Shannon in County Roscommon with his 11 siblings. At the age of 18 he immigrated to Engand and then on to San Francisco where he settled. In 1958, Larry was drafted into the US Army where he served for two years. Upon his return, Larry played Irish Football for the 1960 and ‘61 championship team and was inducted into the San Francisco GAA Hall of Fame.
In 1965 he met the love of his life, Margaret at the Carousel ballroom, and just over a year later they were married, uniting the O’Brien and Moroney and McNulty clans into one family unit. In 1967 Larry and Margaret welcomed their daughter Linda. Larry worked as a plumbing contractor and was always there to help friends and neighbors when they were in need. Larry was a founding member of the United Irish Cultural Center and was the regular MC, joke teller, and musical talent on the annual Connaught trip. In his later years, Larry loved nothing more than taking in 49er and Giants games with his grandchildren Danielle and
Rory, and he even made a pilgrimage to spring training one year.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents Michael and Margaret and his siblings Michael (May), Patricia (Jimmy), Philomena, Tommy, Nancy (Kevin), and Myra.
Larry is survived by his wife Margaret, his daughter Linda Moroney Grady, his son-in-law, Chris, his grandchildren Danielle and Rory, his sisters Nuala (Con), Christine, Mildred (Billy), his brothers Vincent (Betty), and Willie (Nuala) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Friends and family are welcome to join in a funeral mass to Honor Larry on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 1PM at Saint Brendan Church in San Francisco, CA. A celebration of life to follow after the mass.
