Coles’ floater carries TCU past Arizona St.

-

JaKobe Coles hit a floater from the lane with 1.5 seconds left and No. 6 seed TCU rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to beat 11th-seeded Arizona State 72-70 on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Coles took a pass Mike Miles Jr. from near the top of the 3-point circle, dribbled once and let go of the game-winner. Arizona State's desperation heave at the buzzer missed.

Miles, playing on a hyperextended right knee, finished with 26 points for the Horned Frogs (22-12).

They advanced to a secondround matchup with No. 3 seed Gonzaga on Sunday in the West Region.

DJ Horne had 17 for Arizona State (23-13).

On Saturday, Furman couldn't find the same upset magic it had in its first round win over Virginia, getting blown out 75-52 by San Diego State in Orlando, Fla.

Micah Parrish scored 16 points off the bench to lead the Aztecs, while Darrion Trammell added 13.

Mike Bothwell led the Paladins with 15 points, and JP Pegues added 10. Pegues, who vaulted himself into March legend with his game-winner 3-pointer on Thursday against the Cavaliers, hit just three of his 15 shots, as Furman struggled from deep, hitting just six of 26 3-point attempts.

Also, Saturday, Bill Self missed top-seeded Kansas' second-round NCAA Tournament game against Arkansas.

Self, who is recovering from a heart procedure he received earlier this month, has been with his team since it arrived in Des Moines and attended meetings and practices.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic withdrew from Miami Open again because he still can't travel to the United States as a foreign citizen who is not vaccinated against COVID-19.

Djokovic is out of the field for the event that begins next week, a tournament spokesman said Saturday. The 35year-old from Serbia won that event six times, most recently in 2016.

Djokovic is No. 1 in the ATP rankings and is tied with Rafael Nadal — who is injured and also won't be in Miami — at 22 Grand Slam titles, the record for most won by a man. In 2023, Djokovic is 15-1 with two titles, including at the Australian Open in January.

Baseball: Luis Urías hit the go-ahead single in a three-run seventh inning that fueled Mexico's 5-4 comeback victory over Puerto Rico to advance to its first-ever World Baseball Classic semifinals.

Mexico will face Shohei Ohtani and Japan in the semifinals Monday. Puerto Rico failed to make it past the second round for the first time.

Isaac Paredes, who homered earlier, tied it at 4 with a single off losing pitcher Alexis Díaz that drove in Austin Barnes and Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena.

Winter sports: Marco Odermatt underlined his dominance in men's ski racing by breaking the 23-year-old male record for most World Cup points in a single season.

The Swiss standout won his last race of the season, the giant slalom at the World Cup Finals, by a massive 2.11 seconds over second-place Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway.

NFL: The Jacksonville Jaguars are bringing back cornerback Tre Herndon and defensive lineman Adam Gotsis, the latest moves to keep the bulk of last year's AFC South champions intact.

Both players agreed to terms Saturday and are expected to sign deals next week.

Herndon agreed to a oneyear, $2.6 million deal that's full guaranteed, according to a person familiar with negotiations who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because financial details were not disclosed. Gotsis' deal is for two years.
