Mathews Ks eight as Cardinal top Cougars

Quinn Mathews struck out eight batters over 7 innings as No.3 Stanford beat Washington State 7-4 on Friday to earn a series victory in Pullman, Wash.

Matthews (7-3) allowed four runs on seven hits and walked five. Ryan Bruno earned his eighth save of the season with an effective ninth.

Tommy Troy and Carter Graham had three hits apiece for the Cardinal, who improved to 22-7 in Pac-12 play entering Saturday's finale against the Cougars.

Tennis: Holger Rune followed up his latest victory over Novak Djokovic with another impressive performanc­e in Rome, producing a 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2 comeback win over fellow Scandinavi­an Casper Ruud on Saturday to reach the Italian Open final.

In the final, Rune will face either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Daniil Medvedev, who were at 4-4 in the first set when their semifinal was suspended due to rain.

Soccer: The Spanish league and Sevilla denounced an apparent hate act by unknown persons against Sevilla player Joan Jordán on Saturday in Barcelona, Spain, the day before the Seville city derby with Real Betis.

A dummy wearing a Sevilla shirt of Jordán was found on Saturday hung from an overpass in Seville with the banner “Seville hates Nervión” in Spanish. Nervión Stadium is Sevilla's former stadium.

The incident was similar to one suffered by Real Madrid's Vinícius Júnior in January when a dummy with his name on it was hung from an overpass with a rope around its neck along with a banner with the words “Madrid hates Real.”

Vinícius, who is Black, has also been targeted by verbal racist attacks during games.

Hockey: Brett Howden scored from behind the net off Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger 1:35 into overtime Friday in Las Vegas to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 4-3 victory in Game 1 of their Western Conference final.

Jamie Benn forced the extra time when he scored on a 6on-5 with 1:59 left in regulation.

Elsewhere on the ice, the United States shut out Denmark 3-0 on Saturday to stay perfect at the ice hockey world championsh­ip in Tampere, Finland.

The Americans lead Group A with 15 points and have secured a spot in the quarterfin­als.

Horse racing: A horse trained by Bob Baffert was euthanized on the track after going down with injury and unseating his jockey during a race on the Preakness undercard Saturday.

Hours before the second leg of the Triple Crown, favorite Havnameltd­own buckled forward and threw jockey Luis Saez off his back during the sixth race and continued running around the final turn in some distress. The 3-year-old colt was looked at by veterinary staff before being euthanized.

Saez was conscious and taken to a hospital for evaluation, complainin­g of leg pain. He was attended to by medical personnel on the track for several minutes before being put on a stretcher.

Auto racing: Scott Dixon and Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Alex Palou made late engine swaps before the start of qualifying for the Indianapol­is 500 on Saturday in Indianapol­is, while Callum Ilott made it onto the track after his Junco Hollinger Racing team was forced to put together a backup car in just over 12 hours.

Dixon indicated at the conclusion of Friday's final practice that something was amiss, even though the Honda cars in the Ganassi garage have been fast all week. But it was a surprise that both Dixon and Palou wound up changing engines, leaving each of them just 30 minutes of practice before they began their four-lap qualifying attempts later in the day.
