Alyce Hansell died at home surrounded by family on June 26, 2023 at the age of 100. For 71 years, she was the loving wife of the late Ken Hansell, a devoted mother to Kathy Uhl, Bobbie Ritchie, Dave Hansell and Jayne McDonagh, an amazing mother-in-law to Bob Ritchie and Kerry Hansell, and the late Mike Uhl and Jim McDonagh, the doting grandmother of Amy Ritchie Bradford (Michael), Jacob Ritchie (Karen Fong), Chad Ritchie (Ashley), Melissa Hansell (Ed Berdahl), Krissy Hansell Gordon (Jeff), Jill Hansell (Nate Studebaker), Luke McDonagh (Katie Cooper), and Sarah McDonagh Roller (Eric), the adoring great-grandmother of Zander, Porter and Anakena Bradford, Jamie and Corva Ritchie, Mabel, Cierra and Jack Gordon, Matilda Studebaker, Max Berdahl, and Isla and Evie Roller. She was the cherished daughter of the late Alice McGrath Mulzer and Albert Erwin Mulzer and the sister of the late Allan Patrick Mulzer. She also leaves behind many close cousins, nieces, nephews and God-children.

Alyce was born December 30, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio. She moved to San Francisco with her family in 1937 and graduated from Lowell High School in 1941. She joined the Navy at age 21 and served as an aerial gunnery instructor during WWII. As a veteran, she helped organize the American Legion Joan Steven’s Navy Post. After raising her family, she worked as a bookkeeper and volunteered as a dedicated Senior Girl Scout advisor for over 25 years. She inspired hundreds of young women with her genuine confidence in them, exceptional planning skills, and spirit of adventure. She led her troop to places like Hawaii, Havasu Falls, Jamaica and Alaska, and in her retirement, Alyce shared her love of travel by organizing family vacations and trips with each of her grandchildren. At age 85, Alyce began competing in the annual Alaska International Senior Games and in 2009, at the National Senior Games, she earned multiple second place medals in Track and Field. She will forever be remembered for her generosity, faith, and enduring positive attitude, her ability to make everyone feel valued and welcome, and for always having red licorice and hot chocolate well stocked for guests.
