Truth: Some of us feel a tad guilty if we lie down for a rest in the middle of the day.

But a quick nap is incredibly restorative physically and mentally, say the experts. Dozing off can help you shed some stress and possibly even increase brain volume (who knew?). So, as you consider slotting a few minutes of rest into your day, we’re here to help you do it in style — with tips for creating a stylish nap nook.

“A nap nook is a nice addition for those who like to retreat for some uninterrupted time during the day,” says Charlotte Granville, a remodeling specialist at Fixr.

And Peter Spalding, interior designer and co-founder of Daniel House Club, insists nap nooks are beneficial for another reason.

“It also softens the home, and even though it doesn’t take up many square feet, it can often feel like a whole extra room,” he says.

Read on for pro advice to help you assemble this mini oasis. And once it’s ready, don’t hesitate to use it!

Pick a sleep-friendly location

Granville recommends a quiet spot for a nap nook — ”anywhere there’s low foot traffic,” she says.

Spalding favors nap nooks in libraries or combined bedroomhome-office spaces.

“These rooms are usually small, so adding a nap nook gives them the architectural interest they would not have otherwise,” he shares.

The simple bench shown here, near a desk, is one option. But other small areas can work, too: an alcove under a set of steps, a landing where a staircase turns, or one end of a dining room — since meals typically aren’t on the agenda during prime napping hours.

Choose your seat

A bed isn’t required here — but a soft seat or padding certainly is.

“A comfortable chair, chaise, or sofa is ideal,” says Pamela O’Brien, the principal at Pamela Hope Designs. “And putting your feet up or reclining in this piece helps, too.”

A daybed or a custom cushion that fits the nook’s length and width are two other practical options.

“A daybed works as long as it’s low and you dress it with pillows along the backside, so you can use it like a sofa,” says Spalding.

Still want a bed for maximum comfort?

“Dedicating a full-sized one might not be necessary for a nap nook, but if you have the space for it and plan on using it often, go with whatever makes you comfortable,” suggests Granville.

Consider your sleepytime favorites

O’Brien notes that sometimes napping follows a few pages of a good book.

“A bench between bookshelves is a charming spot where you can nod off with a favorite novel,” she suggests.

And as for whether windows are compatible with naps, that depends on personal preference. Granville notes that some nappers might want to control the amount of light coming into the space.

“A nap next to a window can be relaxing if you want to feel the sun’s warmth, look out to nice views, or enjoy the sound of rain against the pane,” she says.

Add in comfort

Plenty of pillows for lounging, plus a soft throw blanket, will take your nap nook to the coziest level. You’ll also want to pick a cushion cover that can be spot-cleaned or tossed into the washing machine — you know your dog or cat will also find their way to this nap nook!

Spalding urges homeowners to upholster their nap nooks for maximum softness.

“If you cover your padding with one fabric — say, mohair — use the same material for the walls to create strong architecture and a true cocoon,” he advises.

Other accessories to add here include a bolster for your neck or under the knees, a small table for glasses or a mug of tea, and a basket or attractive hook to store your blanket when it’s not in use.

Consider light and sound

Stock your nap nook with an eye mask and earplugs, so you can truly zone out. And blinds or a darkening shade can help block light.

“For noise control, turn on a fan or use a white-noise app,” suggests O’Brien.

Meanwhile, Spalding has created nap nooks that can be completely closed off by curtains, “which adds another layer of cozy fun,” he reports.
