Passed away in Bradenton, Fla. on November 20, 2023, age 92. Born in 1931 to Ruby (Mohr) and Harvey Neal Chamberlin in Wilmot, S.D. At age five, his parents divorced and he went to live with Ruby’s sister, Altha Smith in nearby Webster, S.D. while his father was serving in the Army cavalry and his mother was working in San Francisco. In 1947 he joined his mother in Alameda, Calif., and graduated from Alameda High School in 1949. After two years of college, he joined the US Army and was assigned to the Army Security Agency in Arlington, Va., where he underwent cryptanaly­sis training at the National Security Agency. At the end of his enlistment in 1954, he converted to civilian status and continued working for NSA in Maryland. In 1960 he left NSA and returned to Alameda to begin his 33-year career in Informatio­n Management at the US Naval Supply Center in Oakland, Calif. He held various technical and supervisor­y positions before retiring in 1994. He met his wife Helen in 1985 when she transferre­d from Washington, D.C. to take a job which made her his supervisor. They married in 2004. Even after they left California for Florida in 2009, he still faithfully followed his favorite west coast sports teams: SF 49ers, SF Giants, Oakland A’s and the Golden State Warriors. He had an online subscripti­on to the SF Chronicle for years also. He enjoyed working the daily newspaper puzzles, the Word Warp being his favorite. He is survived by his wife, Helen P. Dotson; his cat Chloe; son Norman (Amy) from a previous marriage to Sandra Birdsong Chamberlin; granddaugh­ters Shelby (Adam) Pearce, Christin Chamberlin; greatgrand­aughters Elizabeth Jane and Brooklyn Pearce, all of Nevada; cousins David and Nancy Smith of San Ramon, Calif. There will be no services per his request. Interment of remains will be at Sarasota National Cemetery in Florida.
