September 1, 1952 - March 18, 2024

-

“Auntie Joanie” to her adoring young cousins Elisa and Alex Jones, Joan was always the life-of-the-party.

Born and raised her first six years in San Francisco, she spent weekends with her Great-Aunt Tollie, listening to stories of the Swedish family origins and of old San Francisco with the drama and romance of the great earthquake of 1906.

Joan became an interesting story teller in her own right, recounting stories from the adventurous travels of her youth, and her wonderful later travels. Travelling on three continents, Joan lived in Chile, Alaska, and Lake Tahoe; and later visited friends and family across the U.S. and in Canada, Holland, England, and Poland.

In 1985, Joan met the love of her life, Richard Snook, in South Lake Tahoe, where they worked together with Caltrans. Joan and Richard spent several years in Tahoe, before returning to the Bay Area to be nearby to her parents, family, and many longtime friends. Back in San Francisco, Joan worked with Caltrans as a maintenance Leadworker and Supervisor until she retired.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Ivor Callaway and Patricia Lundberg Callaway; by her brother Patrick Callaway; by the best darn dog that ever danced-for-the-exact-samedinner-every-suppertime, George; and by her dearest sweetheart Richard.

She is survived by her sister-in-law Janice Fett of

Atlanta, Ga; her brother and his husband Scott Callaway and Michal Gizinski of S.F.; her niece (born Kelly Ann Callaway) Amy Lewis of Vancouver, B.C.; grandniece Maya Lewis; grandnephews Dax and Soren Lewis; and Bay Area cousins: Carol (Callaway) McVeigh, Patsy Callaway, Jeff and Liz Jones, Garrett and Patty Jones, Michael and Patricia Lanthier, Patrick Lanthier, Sean and Jenny Lanthier; Richard’s niece Debbie (husband Ben) Walker of Carson City; and many other extended Snook family members.

She will be sorrowfully and lovingly missed by her dear friends Amy Fain and Kay Ross; and by her devoted caregiver and sister-from-another-mother Norma Nabong.

Friends and family are invited to a gathering beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2024 at Duggan’s Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave. in Daly City where a Service will begin at 4:00 p.m.
