Man charged with murder in failed jewelry store heist
A Hayward man was charged with murder in connection with a botched San Ramon jewelry store robbery in which the store owner fatally shot another suspect, a prosecutor said Tuesday.
Krishneel Prasad, 19, was charged with murder in the slaying of alleged fellow robber Kibrom Bairu, 18, of Hayward, said Contra Costa County Deputy District Attorney John Cope. Prasad was also charged with three counts of armed robbery and weapons enhancements.
Bairu, who was armed with a gun, Prasad and two other men entered the Gold N Treasures store at 2550 San Ramon Valley Blvd. about 4:30 p.m. last Wednesday, just as the store was closing, authorities said.
The men confronted store owner Everett Parvin, 61, of Dublin, an employee and a customer, and Parvin pulled a gun and shot Bairu, authorities said. Bairu stumbled out onto San Ramon Valley Boulevard and was taken to San Ramon Regional Medical Center, where he died.
Prasad was charged with murder under the state’s provocative-act doctrine, which holds an accomplice responsible when a crime partner acts in a way that leads to death.
The store owner won’t face criminal charges because an investigation determined that he acted in self-defense and “was within the legal right” to protect himself, Cope said.
On his Twitter account, Bairu spoke of guns and money and referred to women with a derogatory word. But Bairu was also described as a dependable employee at a Union City coffee shop that employed him as part of an internship through a youth program.
The two other assailants remain at large.
