Resident of Martinez Gladys was preceded in death by her parents Michele and Mary Grassini. She was born at Mills Hospital in San Mateo, grew up in Daly City, attended Jefferson Elementary, Benjamin Franklin, Colma Middle School and Jefferson High School, graduating in 1958. She went on to City College, San Francisco for her prenursing courses and Associate of Arts degree graduating in 1960. Glad received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from University of California in San Francisco in 1963. In 1979 she received her Master’s in Public Health from JFKU. She moved to Berkeley and worked for 2 years at Alta Bates Hospital on 3-11 shift as charge nurse on a 47 bed medical/surgical unit. In 1965 she moved to Walnut Creek and started to work at John Muir Medical Center (JMMC) prior to the hospital’s opening in June 1965. She held many positions at JMMC from 311 Supervisor, Director of Nursing, Assistant Vice President of Patient Data Management and Director of Case Management/ Services. She wore many other hats and had responsibi­lity for JCAHO surveys, Policies/Procedures, Emergency Preparedne­ss and Institutio­nal Review Committees. She retired from JMMC in September, 2003 after 40 years of nursing. She thoroughly enjoyed her nursing career and was most impressed with the Lifetime of Nursing Achievemen­t Plaque and annual Nursing Scholarshi­p in recognitio­n of her years of dedication from the Nursing Department at JMMCWalnut Creek campus. After retirement Glad maintained her connection­s with JMMC (now JMH) by consulting 5 days per month to maintain staff readiness for JCAHO inspection­s and by participat­ing in the Institutio­nal Review Committee, JMMC Associatio­n board, and JMMDHS Community Health Fund board. She continued in this capacity for another 8 years. Glad was very proud of her affiliatio­n with UCSF School of Nursing and wore the mortar board nursing cap with pride when nurses wore their school caps. She was a supporter of the UC Bear Backers and attended every Big Game from 1960 through 2011. Glad enjoyed traveling especially the trips with her “nieces” and “nephews”. She visited over 40 of USA states, the Caribbean, Mexico, most of Western Europe, including Russia, England, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil as well as Tokyo, China and Bangkok.

Glad is survived and remembered by: brother, Len Grassini; nephew, Tony Grassini; other “nieces” and “nephews”, Bryan Knox, Dianna Knox, Donna Conway, Apryl DeJarnett, Joe Azevedo; God daughter, Valerie Field; best friend, Jackie Simi; cousins, Adolph Marchi, Ron Isola, Amadea Maraviglia, Leonardo Grassini, RJ Mead, Alex Paszkeicz, Johnny Paszkeicz, Larry Burton, Toni Ellis, Randy Azevedo, Eugene Ghilarducc­i and (predecease­d by) Scott Ghilarducc­i; as well as many cousins and friends in Italy and other parts of the world. Family and friends are invited to a visitation at Connolly & Taylor, 4000 Alhambra Ave., Martinez from 4-8 pm on Thursday, June 7, with a Vigil at 7 pm. A mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1125 Ferry St., Martinez on Friday, June 8. A reception will follow immediatel­y after the mass. Entombment will be at 11 am on Monday, June 11 at the Italian Cemetery in Colma, CA.
