Steele back in the booth

- By Susan Slusser

Wearing a natty three-piece suit and a purple tie, Roy Steele was back in the publicaddress booth at the Coliseum.

Steele, “The Voice of God,” introduced the members of the 2002 team on hand for Saturday’s celebration of the A’s American League-record 20game winning streak.

“It’s just lovely,” said the longtime A’s PA announcer, who has been sidelined by health problems since late 2005. “It’s wonderful to be able to come back and see all the same people are here, everyone in Diamond Vision, Mike Crowley, Billy Beane, Ray Fosse — they’ve always been so very, very nice to me.”

Though his health has not improved greatly, Steele, who turns 80 this month, said he hopes to journey from his home in Auburn to another A’s game in September.

Steele’s appearance Saturday was a surprise to almost everyone.

“It’s fantastic,” A’s radio broadcaster Ken Korach said. “Those are wonderful memories and to have Roy here makes the night perfect. Fans will be thrilled to hear his voice again.” Anderson decision soon: Brett Anderson threw a 40-pitch bullpen session and he must return to the majorleague roster Monday because the rehab assignment limit for a pitcher is 30 days.

Should the A’s want Anderson to make another start at Triple-A Sacramento, they would need to option him, but that’s unlikely considering he is strong enough to start for Oakland after throwing 96 pitches for the River Cats on Wednesday.

Manager Bob Melvin was impressed with Anderson’s bullpen session, but he said no decision had been made about his return. Anderson said he’s eager to be back, but, he said, “We’ll see what happens.”

If anyone were to come out of the rotation, it probably would be one of the three rookies. Dan Straily is the latest arrival. Jarrod Parker and Tommy Milone have had some recent struggles. With roster expansion in September, any demotion would be brief. Briefly: Brandon Inge (shoulder) hit off a tee. … Shortstop Addison Russell, the 11th overall pick in June, was promoted to low-A ball Burlington.
