Astros fire manager Mills, 2 coaches
The struggling Astros have fired manager Brad Mills and two members of his coaching staff on Saturday night.
Mills was in his third season as manager of the Astros, who have the worst record in the major leagues. The team announced the moves in an e-mail almost two hours after its loss to the Diamondbacks.
Houston also fired hitting coach Mike Barnett and first-base coach Bobby Meacham. The Astros say first-year general manager Jeff Luhnow will name an interim manager and other staff members in a news conference Sunday morning.
Mills became the first big-league manager to be fired this season. Mattingly suspended: Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has been suspended for two games, beginning with Saturday night’s game in Atlanta.
Mattingly also was given an undisclosed fine “for excessive arguing” with home-plate umpire Angel Campos in Thursday’s 10-6 loss in Pittsburgh.
Outfielder Matt Kemp, who was also ejected from the game, received
no suspension or fine. Boston prospect hurt: Red Sox pitching prospect Brian Johnson was hit in the face with a line drive in a Future Games at Fenway Park.
Johnson sustained multiple orbital bone fractures on the left side of his face when he was struck. A Red Sox spokeswoman says Johnson was taken to a hospital and was resting comfortably. There were no signs of a concussion.
Johnson, 21, has not allowed a run in three games and 51⁄ innings for Lowell in the Class A New York-Penn League. Grieving Gonzalez: The Rockies have placed outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the bereavement list after the death of his grandfather in Venezuela. He will be eligible to rejoin the team in New York on Tuesday. The Rockies recalled outfielder Charlie Blackmon from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Saturday. Deal for Castro? There were reports that the Cubs signed shortstop Starlin Castro to a sevenyear, $60 million contract extension, but general manager Theo Epstein denied a deal had been reached.
