Gil John Anselmo

A self-made entreprene­ur respected and admired in the real estate community, passed away August 15th, 2012 of cancer after fighting a valiant and dignified battle. Gil was born July 9th, 1919 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Italian immigrant parents, Nicola Anselmo and Teresa Carta Anselmo. At seven years of age, Gil moved with his family to San Francisco and lived there until he retired in 1990. During WWII, Gil joined the Merchant Marines. Upon his discharge from the Merchant Marines, Gil dabbled unsuccessf­ully in several jobs. He soon realized he marched to the beat of his own drum and began a successful and long-lived career in Real Estate. More than 125 apartment buildings, hotels, parking lots, homes and other properties in the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern Nevada were bought, developed and sold by him during his career. His “Clay Hill” Project (Clay and Jones Street) is credited with being the first condominiu­m conversion in San Francisco. Survivors include his loving wife Carol Jean Hadlock Anselmo, daughter Katherine Shields, granddaugh­ter Lillian, brother Frank (Irene) Anselmo, sister-inlaw Betty Anselmo and many beloved nieces, grand-nieces, nephews, grand-nephews and cousins. Proceeded in death by brother Ralph (Pat) Anselmo, sister Grace (Frank) Silvagni, sister Gloria (Hugh) Pickett and brother Julio Anselmo. He was also lucky to share special and life long friendship­s with Louis Gonzales, Al and Cheryl Scoma, Boris Selitsch, Peter Stich, Steve Matsura, John Rosenbaum, John Burton, Emil Magliocco, the Annuzzi family, Lee Schultz, Lula, Hoover Chin and Kevin Chin. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at the St. Francis of Assisi, 65 East 500 North, Orem, Utah. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Tuesday evening from 6 until 8. Interment, Provo City Cemetery.
