Music festival Seattle:
It’s not often Tony Bennett, above, shares headliner status with Jane’s Addiction and Keane, not to mention hip-hop acts such as Mac Miller and Big Sean, but the threeday Bumbershoot music and arts festival over the Labor Day weekend prides itself on diversity. World heritage Brazil:
While Rio de Janeiro readies for the next Summer Olympics (plus a little thing called World Cup soccer), the city has scored another accolade. UNESCO recently named the “Carioca landscapes between the mountain and the sea,” from postcard-inspiring Corcovado, left, to song-inspiring Ipanema, as a World Heritage Site — the only South American addition in 2012.
Holiday Ukraine:
Although only an estimated 1 percent of Ukrainians are Muslim — about 400,000, according to a 2010 Pew Fund study — the end of Ramadan this weekend is marked by a two-day public holiday in the autonomous republic of Crimea. Wildlife Kenya:
The “Great Migration” is under way, with millions of zebra, wildebeest and Thomson’s gazelle heading to the Maasai Mara National Reserve from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park through October. Currency Solomon Islands:
Don’t take any wooden nickels — and don’t store new coins in wooden boxes. The Central Bank here is advising the latter in order to get seven newly minted, gold-look dollars and silver-look cents into circulation. They still feature Queen Elizabeth on one side and traditional images such as sea spirits on the other; old ones can be exchanged for them through Dec. 31.
