San Jose State goes to 9-2 with victory over BYU

Keith Smith sacked Brigham Young quarterbac­k Riley Nelson and forced a fumble at the San Jose State 36 with less than two minutes to play Saturday night, helping the Spartans preserve a 20-14 victory at Spartan Stadium.

The win improved the Spartans’ record to 9-2.

San Jose State led 20-7 at halftime but the Cougars (6-5) made it 20-14 on Nelson’s 20-yard touchdown pass to David Foote with 3:37 to play.

BYU then recovered an onside kick and drove to the Spartans’ 21 before Smith’s hit caused Nelson to fumble. Vince Buhagiar recovered at the Spartans’ 36 and San Jose State was able to run out the clock.

Spartans quarterbac­k David Fales was 25-of-34 for 305 yards and three touchdowns. #4 Alabama 49, Western Carolina 0: Eddie Lacy rushed for three first-half touchdowns for the Crimson Tide (10-1), and AJ McCarron set a school single-season record for passing touchdowns. #6 Ohio State 21, Wisconsin 14: Carlos Hyde scored on a 2-yard run in overtime. … The win gave visiting Ohio State (11-0, 7-0 Big Ten) the Leaders Division title outright. … Montee Ball tied the major-college record with his 78th TD for the Badgers (7-4, 4-3). #5 Georgia 45, Georgia Southern 14: Aaron Murray threw four touchdown passes for the host Bulldogs (10-1). … The Eagles fell to 8-3. #7 Florida 23, Jacksonvil­le St. 0: The Gators (10-1) used a strong defensive effort to overcome a sluggish offensive performanc­e at home. … The FCS Gamecocks (6-5) were held to 252 total yards.
