Richard Shattuck Frisbie

Passed away peacefully at home in Hillsborough on Saturday, November 10, 2012. Born May 26, 1939 in Dodge City, Kansas to Howard and Muriel Frisbie, he spent his childhood in Moberly Missouri where he attended Moberly High School. He loved and played all sports, but golf was his calling. At 16 he shot a 66, five strokes under par, on his home course in Moberly. Traveling around the Midwest, he participated in junior amateur golf tournaments, and planned on playing in college until he realized that his architectural curriculum left no time. Richard received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Oklahoma State University in 1962. He then served two years in the United States Army as a Lieutenant in the Artillery. For the majority of time he was stationed at Fort Ord in Monterey where he was frequently the requested golf partner of the high ranking officers. After the service Richard went back to school and received a Master of Regional Planning degree from Kansas State University in 1966. Richard started his career in Fremont, CA in 1966 as a Senior Planner with the City. In 1970, he started his first company, eventually known as The Frisbie Planning Company, where he focused on the planning, design and processing of private residential projects all over the San Francisco Bay Area. He was known as the Land Planning Guru and the Urban Planner who signs his name ¿Frisbie'. Richard was passionate about his work, and was respected as a major influence in Bay Area housing. During his career he planned over 100,000 units in Fremont and all around the Bay Area which facilitated significant growth in residential housing and the quality of life for so many people. Richard was a charter member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, and past Chairman of the Town of Hillsborough's Architectural and Design Review Board. He was involved in the community and was a longtime member of Green Hills Country Club, where he continued his love of the game of golf. Survivors include his wife and best friend, Shelley Frisbie, his children, Douglas Shattuck Frisbie, Suzanne Brownell Frisbie, and Stefanie Angela Ledward, his stepchildren Michael Chapman and James Chapman, and grandchildren Jake Hidas, Morgan Hidas, Brandon Hargrove, Christian Hargrove, Daniel Hargrove, Nicholas Ledward, Keilah Ledward, David Frisbie, and Matthew Frisbie.
