Miles Unterreiner
And you think you had a bad weekend? Consider the case of the Stanford cross-country runner, whose busy Saturday included an injured hamstring in the NCAA meet — and later learning he hadn’t been picked for a Rhodes Scholarship after flying cross-country. Unterreiner began his day in Louisville, Ky., where he placed 140th in the 6.2-mile race in 31 minutes, 3.2 seconds — the final collegiate race for Unterreiner. Immediately afterward, Unterreiner flew via private plane to Seattle to interview as a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship and a spot to study next year at Oxford University in England. He was denied. Nonetheless, he remained upbeat, saying, “It was a terrific experience,” but admitting, “It was a pretty tough weekend.”
