Marlins close to bringing back Pierre

The Miami Marlins are planning on having Juan Pierre take a physical Monday, amid reports that they have agreed on a $1.6 million, one-year deal that would reunite them with the 35-year-old outfielder.

Pierre was with the Marlins for three seasons ending in 2005, helping the franchise win the World Series in 2003.

A career .297 hitter, Pierre batted .307 in 130 games last season with the Philadelph­ia Phillies. Pierre stole 37 bases last season, tied for fifth-most in the National League. College football: Derek Dooley is out as head coach at Tennessee. The university announced the anticipate­d firing Sunday after Dooley posted the program’s longest run of losing seasons in more than a century. Dooley, 44, had a 15-21 record that included an 0-15 mark against Top 25 teams. Dooley was 4-19 in SEC games during his three-year tenure and had lost 14 of his past 15 conference games. Speedskati­ng: American Heather Richardson won the women’s 1,000 meters at the first World Cup meet of the season at Heerenveen, Netherland­s, finishing in 1 minute, 15.27 seconds to beat Hong Zhang of China. Marathon: A husband-wife duo took top honors at the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay. Arizona’s Ben Bruce finished first in 1:04:45, surpassing Ugandan Samuel Kosgei and Kenyan Fred Tumbo, who had a photo finish for second. Bruce’s wife of two weeks, Stephanie Rothstein-Bruce, won with the second-fastest women’s time in event history at 1:12:19.
