Red Sox place Hanrahan on DL for 2nd time in ’13

-

The Red Sox on Tuesday placed closer Joel Hanrahan on the disabled list for the second time this season.

Hanrahan went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm. He left Monday night’s 11-inning, 6-5 win over the Twins in the ninth inning.

He was on the DL last month with a strained right hamstring. Andrew Bailey replaced him as closer, but went on the disabled list before Monday’s game with a strained right biceps.

Right-hander Allen Webster replaced Hanrahan on the roster after being recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Webster is scheduled to start Wednesday night against Minnesota.

In one start with Boston this season, he allowed two earned runs in six innings in a 10-inning, 5-4 loss to Kansas City on April 21. Helton pleads guilty: Colorado first baseman Todd Helton has been sentenced to a year of probation and 24 hours of community service after pleading guilty to driving while ability-impaired.

Helton entered his plea and apologized Tuesday in a suburban Denver courtroom.

He had been charged with driving under the influence and careless driving after his Feb. 6 arrest, but prosecutors dropped those charges under a plea deal. Police say Helton told officers he had two cups of wine. Pirates’ McDonald on DL: Pittsburgh placed right-hander James McDonald on the 15-day DL with stiffness in his right shoulder.

The move came just hours before McDonald was scheduled to pitch against Seattle. Jeanmar Gomez started in McDonald’s place and threw five shutout innings in the Pirates’ 4-1 win.

McDonald, 28, is 2-2 with a 5.76 ERA in six starts this season. He give up seven runs on eight hits in five innings in his last start, in Milwaukee on April 30.

The Pirates recalled infielder Josh Harrison from Triple-A. Briefly: Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was held out of the Rockies’ lineup as a precaution after an MRI exam revealed minor swelling in his left groin. Tulowitzki missed most of last season with a groin injury that required surgery to remove scar tissue. Colorado trainer Keith Dugger said this injury is in the same area but is unrelated. … The Cardinals activated first baseman Matt Adams (right oblique) from the DL.
