2020 Olympic Games awarded to Tokyo
Cheers and shouts of “Banzai!!” echoed across Tokyo just after sunrise as thousands of people started celebrating the city’s successful bid to host the 2020 Olympics, beating rivals Istanbul and Madrid despite concerns about a nuclear plant leaking radioactive water.
A slight favorite ahead of the International Olympic Committee’s vote in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Japan’s capital defeated Istanbul 60-36 in the final round. Madrid was eliminated in the first round.
More than 1,200 dignitaries and Olympic athletes crammed into a convention hall in downtown To- kyo at 5 a.m. local time Sunday to usher in the start of the buildup for the Tokyo 2020 Games. Shouts of “Banzai” — a typical Japanese celebratory yell after big victories — filled the hall when the winning bid was confirmed.
Basketball: Jeffery Taylor scored 25 points, and Sweden upset Russia 81-62 for its first win at the European championships in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Russia, the Olympic bronze medalist last year and bronze medalist at the European event two years ago, now looks unlikely to make the second round after three straight defeats.
Also Saturday, defending champion Spain limited the Czech Republic to two points in the final quarter and ran away with a 60-39 victory. Rudy Fernandez had 14 points, and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio added 10 for Spain.
Hockey: The Phoenix Coyotes locked up one of their top young scorers, signing left wing Mikkel Boedker to a two-year contract that averages $2.55 million per season.
The Washington Capitals resigned restricted free agent center Marcus Johansson to a two-year, $4 million contract.
Hall of Famer Brett Hull, the St. Louis Blues’ career leading scorer, is rejoining the organization in the front office.
