Raiders at Colts

Spotlight on: RB Darren McFadden

Quarterback Terrelle Pryor is making his second career start, but the offense starts and stops with McFadden. The Raiders played it safe and sat out McFadden the last two preseason games, but coach Dennis Allen said he has looked “explosive” in practice. That was not the case a year ago, as McFadden’s 3.3 yards per carry was the lowest average ever for a Raiders running back with at least 150 carries. But Oakland scrapped the cut-back-happy zone-blocking scheme and went back to the straight-ahead, power-gap one that McFadden prefers.

Injury notes: Raiders — Tackle Menelik Watson (knee) and tight end David Ausberry (shoulder) are out, and LB Sio Moore (foot) is questionable. Colts – LB Pat Angerer (head) is doubtful, and RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) is probable.

BIG 3

Can the Raiders get to Luck? Andrew Luck took a beating last year, but Indianapolis has shored up its offensive line and Oakland doesn’t have any proven pass rushers. They will have to blitz Luck a lot. “You have to be precise,” Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver said. “You have to have endurance. You have to keep doing things right for four quarters to have a chance to beat a team with him on it.”

Pryor’s escapability: Pryor will have to outrun defenders to have any chance to keep this one close. Fill-in tackles Khalif Barnes and Tony Pashos will be trying to fend off talented pass rushers Robert Mathis, Erik Walden and rookie Bjoern Werner.

Starting from the back: The Raiders think they have greatly upgraded their secondary, and it will be put to the test early. Indianapolis receivers Reggie Wayne, Darrius Heyward-Bey and dangerous T.Y. Hilton will be covered by newcomers Tracy Porter, Mike Jenkins and firstround pick D.J. Hayden.
